What is Advisory?
Advisory is a time when a group of students meet with a faculty member who will
stay with them throughout their high school years. The faculty member’s role is
to improve each learner’s school experience through:
- monitoring academic progress
- assisting with career planning
- guiding the students through the culminating project process.
How Does Advisory Work?
- Each advisory group has 15-20 students in the same grade level. You
will stay with the same group and advisor as you progress through MVHS.
- Advisories will meet twice this spring--on May 9 and June 6. In the next
school year, advisories will meet twice a month for 35-40 minutes.
- All students are required to attend advisory sessions.
Do I Get a Grade for Advisory?
- You do not get a grade on your progress report for your advisory group.
However, all students are required to complete a Culminating Project
portfolio before they can graduate. Many of the documents required for
this portfolio will be done in advisory sessions. If you do not complete
these assignments, you will need to finish them before your Culminating
Project will be approved for graduation.
Do I Have Other Responsibilities Connected to Advisories?
- Next spring, each student will participate in a student-led conference.
For students in grades 9, 10, and 11, you will present the contents of
your portfolio to a parent and/or other family representatives. You will
prepare for these conferences during your advisory sessions.
- During this conference, your advisor will observe the conference, but
YOU will be responsible for presenting the information about your
progress and plans for the future.
- If a family representative cannot attend your conference, you will present
your portfolio to a staff member.
- Seniors will present their Culminating Project to a family representative
and a staff member during this time.
